HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese Premier Li Keqiang praised the Hong Kong government’s efforts to revive the economy as it eases COVID-19 restrictions, in a meeting Thursday with the leader of the territory in Beijing.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee is making his first trip to the capital to deliver a year-end report to leaders. He is expected to meet with President Xi Jinping to discuss the political, economic and COVID-19 situation before returning to Hong Kong on Saturday.
Li expressed his approval of Lee’s work six months ago, which relaxed many of the city’s COVID-19 restrictions, to help restore Hong Kong’s image as a strong financial center.
“The results of Hong Kong and the mother are closely related,” said Li. “I hope that the Hong Kong government will be united and guide the people of Hong Kong to contribute to its good conditions while integrating it into the development plan. it belongs to the country according to the needs of the country”.
The city should continue to strengthen its position as an international financial center and global and maritime trade center while integrating into China’s development, he added.
Lee, a former defense minister, took over the city’s top job from Carrie Lam on July 1. Lam left after five tumultuous years that saw the city shake up. in the many protests against democracy in 2019, a political process later crushed the protests with the coronavirus. the plague that killed thousands of people and destroyed the city’s economy.
In an election in May, Lee won 99% of the vote from a committee stacked with many pro-Beijing candidates to become the sole candidate in the race. He was the fifth mayor of the city when the former British colony was returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
The day before Lee went to Beijing, he said that he will announce the intention of Hong Kong people to reopen the border with mainland China. which is seen as the key to increasing the city’s economy. Most of the checkpoints between Hong Kong and China have been closed due to many diseases.
