James Cameron has already teased a few details for the latest installment Avatar right to vote, Avatar 3, continuation of the record-breaking success Avatar: The Way of the Water.
Despite only being released on December 16, The road of the water has received an airlift. Starting off with a strong critical response to its stunning visuals, the film went on to become the fastest box office film to reach the lofty $1 billion milestone in 2022 and has now grossed over $1.28 billion worldwide to date.
Avatar: The Way of the Water has been a huge success and this will be a relief for James Cameron, who pegs the future of science fiction on box office numbers and audience response.
Fortunately, the future of the franchise is bright, and Cameron has already shared a plot for it Avatar 3.
James Cameron teases Avatar 3 plot
In an interview with the French newspaper 20 Minutes, director James Cameron has talked about his plans for Avatar 3.
Viewers can expect a new side of Pandora and her natives, the Na’vi, as Avatar 3 is intended to reinvent the wheel and introduce the audience to “Ash people,” which represent fiery and volcanic life.
“A different culture than I’ve already shown. The fire will be represented by the “Cinderella”.
However, fire and ash won’t be the only new addition as the CEO has stated that the third one will undermine how the Na’vi have been presented thus far.
While both Avatar and its continuation introduced people in a “very negative” way and Na’vi in a “very positive” loudly, Cameron has said so Avatar 3 “will do the opposite.”
“I want to show the Na’vi in a different light because so far I’ve only shown their good sides. In the first films there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite.”
The innovative filmmaker emphasized that Avatar and The road of the water were basic works. Introducing the world and its characters for the next installments raises the stakes and expands the universe more than ever before.
It also seems that exploring a new side of the Na’vi won’t be the only change.
So far, all the films have focused solely on the lush planet of Pandora, but Cameron teased another change that Avatar 3 is set to come. The film will explore “new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters,” but it depends on whether The road of the water “finds its audience.”
“We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the food. But, obviously, everything depends on how Avatar 2 is received, whether it finds its audience.”
What else will Avatar 3 be about?
It’s definitely a trend for the franchise. The first film whisked audiences away to the forest, and its hugely expensive sequel took audiences to the sea, introducing a new Na’vi tribe each time.
Now it seems that the third will continue this tradition and introduce the “Cinders”, a fiery tribe that will reveal a new side to the people of Pandora.
Some have speculated that “Cinderella” will be used to portray the Na’vi in a less favorable light, which could mean they are more aggressive. Cameron didn’t say this directly though; this new side of the Na’vi could mean many things.
They can be less welcoming to outsiders, especially as Avatar and The road of the water share themes of finding new belonging in a previously unfamiliar space.
Since Spider (Jack Champion) also seems to feel like she belongs with the Sully family after growing up with the Na’vi despite being human, Jake and his family may face further complications when they meet the tribe after adopting his new son and the threat of humans that still looms.
Regardless, it seems that Avatar 3 will expand your horizons and explore whole new worlds instead of focusing only on one Pandoran tribe.
This will be a welcome break from tradition and help prevent the franchise from becoming too predictable or stale.
The long-awaited sequel to 2009 Avatar has become a DJ; the film has undoubtedly found its audience and fans can expect to return to Pandora on December 20, 2024.
