In his new memoir, “Spare,” Prince Harry reveals new details about Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s ugly fight over the bridesmaids’ dresses for the 2018 Sussex wedding.
The Duke of Sussex, 38, wrote that the Princess of Wales wrote to his wife the week of their wedding about a “problem” with daughter Princess Charlotte’s dress for the event.
“French haute couture” clothes are “hand-stitched only on [the bridesmaids’] measurements” so sure they needed some tweaks, Harry wrote about the pint-sized designs, created by Givenchy’s then-director Clare Waight Keller, who made Markle’s wedding dress.
The Duchess of Sussex, 41, responded to Middleton and told her to bring Charlotte, now 7, to the palace, where a waiter was waiting to change for the six brides. ; According to Harry, this was “not enough” for the queen, who arranged a time for the pair to talk.
Charlotte’s dress was “too big, long and baggy,” Middleton told Markle, adding that “the child cried when she tried it on.”
When Markle also said that Middleton should bring Charlotte to the dresser for alterations, Harry wrote, the queen told him that the bride’s clothes had to be completely made – and in four days remaining to be married.
According to the Duke, Middleton also said that her own wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, agreed with her assessment.
When the Princess of Wales finally agreed to visit the courtroom with Charlotte, Harry wrote, he found Markle crying “on the floor” after the argument. The next day, he continued, Middleton thanked him and brought him flowers and a card.
It’s in Harry’s new memory
Harry’s summary of the stress will expand on Markle’s comments during the Sussexes’ bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021; When it was reported that Markle made Middleton cry before their wedding, she said at the time, “it’s changed.”
“I don’t think it’s right for him to go into the news because he’s offended, and I’ve forgiven him,” the Duchess of Sussex told Winfrey.
Clearly, her husband isn’t afraid to put it all on the line.
