M3GAN is dying at the box office and there are already plans for a sequel. Screenwriter Akela Cooper opened up about writing the script for the horror film, revealing that it was originally “more glamorous” and an unrated version is possibly in development.
“No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that when the trailer went online, teenagers were involved and you want them to be able to see it.” There should be an unrated version at some point,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “I heard it was on the books. But yes, this was much sharper. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie.”

Cooper, who also wrote Malignantsaid that M3GAN The body count wasn’t “a massive massacre” like in the previous film “but it killed a lot more people, including several characters that James [Wan] was like, ‘I like what you did to these people, but I want them to live.’ I was ruthless, but then again, that’s me. My sense of humor is extremely dark.”
Still M3GAN is in the horror genre, it has some funny elements throughout. Cooper said it was “exciting” to see the change from studio executives who were swaying away from blockbuster films.
“An executive who read one of my scripts and really liked it said, ‘It’s frustrating and nobody’s kidding now.’ We’ve got to wait for a horror movie that has gore to come out and hit the market and then the market will change.” “Now I am [hearing], ‘It’s gore, and it’s not a problem.’ I’m glad I could play a part in bringing some fun horror that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m reading about more horror movies that are wild, ideas that come out or are bought. And some of them are original, which is good! I’m glad that I could steer that ship so that studio executives can be like, “Oh! There might actually be money in those hills.'”
M3GAN has also been compared to Chucky from Child’s play and Cooper talked about how she could tell them apart.
“Chucky is a doll; this is an AI companion. To avoid that obstacle, she has to be the size of whatever child she’s befriending,” she explained. “Originally, Cady was 6 or 7, and now she’s 8 in the movie. [So M3GAN] is taller and she is able to walk around, mobile, which immediately sets her apart from Annabelle and Chucky. You want the creepy one, because it bothers people.”
