Snow, extreme cold is expected to move into the Omaha area Wednesday through Thursday

Things are really going to start going downhill in the Omaha metro. We are under this winter storm warning now. It runs until 7pm on Friday. That includes all those counties up there in Rose and up in Carroll, Crawford, and Ottoman County. These districts are orange. These will be upgraded. People here have been upgraded to a blizzard warning starting tomorrow at noon. Right now, still under a winter storm warning. So here is the storm forecast until the afternoon. This model tries to bring some freezing drizzle with the snow. But as we saw already this morning, mostly everything is light snow. So light snow showers that last on and off until the afternoon. Early evening, some light accumulations are possible according to the evening travel plan in smooth conditions. But when we get to 9:00, that’s when the winds start to pick up and start to see that arctic air come in. So conditions deteriorate, especially after 9pm so pockets of snow and maybe some bending snow will arrive overnight. And then most of it came down from here around 4:00 am. So in the 9pm to 4am window we will see the bulk of the snow here in the Omaha metro. But even after the snow pushes out, we’re still going to see the impact of the wind and extreme cold brought by blowing snow conditions early tomorrow morning. This early Thursday, it’s likely we’ll see the worst driving conditions here across the Omaha metro. In terms of snow totals, still thinking 3 to 5, mostly south and east of the Omaha metro, 1 to 3 westward, I’m thinking about three here in Omaha. It all depends on where these bands end up. If we go under it, we’ll be a little higher without it will be a little lower. But regardless, as the wind and cold move in, expect those effects, especially as we head into Thursday morning. It’s going to be cold around the holiday weekend. The wind chill warning will come into effect tonight. And stay with us until noon on Saturday. Most of this time we’ll see it feel like temperatures 30 to 40 below zero. Here is RADAR UPPER SEVEN right now. I could see a small flurry of light snow moving over BELLEVUE I-29 towards RAILWAY and SILVER CITY to the east. So expect the snow to catch up a bit. You can see some of the visibility below. I haven’t really seen any build up from the light stuff this morning, but it’s sticking to the roofs and some of the cars here from our vantage point, the Memphis Women’s Hospital. So few storms, light snow in EPPLEY at the moment, 14 degrees with the wind. Feels like one. But hey, it feels like too much for now. It is above zero and well above zero. Down to our south, we have that wind more from the south. So we’ll still raise those temperatures a bit more during the afternoon, midday. But watch what happens towards the evening. The wind drops and then veers out of the northwest and then picks up. So when that happens, that’s when we’re going to see these conditions really deteriorate. So during the evening drive, you will still be able to walk around. But again, beware of smooth situations. It’s after nine. I have the hard impact icon as we’ll see the breakout of this arctic air. The winds pick up those temperatures tank and that snow picks up a bit. So again, later tonight and then especially for Thursday morning commutes, not going to be great in the metro area. So still some light snow scattered around Nebraska and Iowa. More snow is developing here in the west and it’s back to where the coldest air is right now, nine below in RAPID CITY, six below. And here, it’s just the air temperature. So here it is right on our doorstep. So this low is going to approach, bring this arctic front through the snow, this very cold air intrusion and then again on the back side, blowing snow. Worry here tomorrow and then another blizzard like conditions across most of Iowa heading into Thursday. So we have the severe impact heading into Thursday with continued blowing snow and the threat of extreme cold. Continue like this on Friday.

A winter storm is expected to move into the Omaha area Wednesday through Thursday. A winter storm warning will be in effect from noon Wednesday until 7 p.m. Friday. Eastern Nebraska and western Iowa will also be under a wind radiation warning from noon Thursday until noon Saturday. After a cold start Wednesday morning, light snow is expected to move into the Omaha area this afternoon. Smooth roads will be possible for afternoon and evening travel. The worst conditions are expected to begin after 9pm on Wednesday as arctic air moves in and northwesterly winds pick up. Snow and blowing snow may cause brief whiteout conditions overnight. 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected in the Omaha area, with most arriving before 4 a.m. Higher amounts are possible in western Iowa. Driving conditions will be at their worst early Thursday morning. Sustained strong winds, expected to gust around 40 km/h, blowing snow and extreme cold will create hazardous driving conditions for the rest of Thursday and Friday. With the wind chill warning, temperatures are expected to remain between 30 and 40 degrees.
