Here’s this week’s congressional update from BakerHostetler’s federal policy team. We will continue to post in a few weeks when both chambers of Congress convene.

  • House Democrats will hold their leadership election, with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., set to be their new standard-bearer following Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision not to continue her historic leadership term.

  • In Saturday’s runoff election, Georgia voters will decide between incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and challenger Herschel Walker.

  • President Joe Biden will host French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House, including a state dinner.

House

  • The House of Representatives will convene tomorrow through Friday, with an agenda that includes bipartisan criminal justice reforms.

  • House Democrats will hold an election to choose their next generation of leadership, with Reps. Jeffries, Kathleen Clarke, D-Mass., and Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., as their top three leaders.

  • Newly-majority House Republicans will pick their own committee chairs, including a tight race for the gavel on the Ways and Means Committee for a tax bill.

  • The Senate will reconvene and begin final consideration of legislation to protect same-sex marriage.

  • Senators will be watching the Georgia contest closely, as the seat has huge implications for Democrats’ ability to manage their narrow Senate majority.

  • The Senate Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on the FTX collapse with Commodity Futures Trading Committee Chairman Rustin Behnem.

  • Biden will visit a semiconductor factory in Bay City, Michigan tomorrow to introduce the CHIPS Act and science.

  • The 100th National Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on Wednesday with the Bidens in attendance.

  • On Thursday, Biden will host Macron for meetings as well as his first state dinner as president.
