USA vs. Switzerland live score, highlights, updates from 2023 World Juniors

Less than 24 hours removed from a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Slovakia, the United States turned its attention to Switzerland when the two met on Thursday at the 2023 World Junior Championship.

After coming up short in the opening win over Latvia, the USA lost in the second round to Slovakia. The Americans gave up three goals in less than four minutes, and a 2-1 lead turned into a 4-2 deficit.

“I think we just lost our game in the second period and allowed two goals that we shouldn’t have,” Luke Hughes said. “I think we have to work harder on defense and get back to our game. That’s what we paid for.”

A third-period comeback wasn’t enough as Slovakia grabbed a 6-3 win, the team’s first of the tournament.

“We got our teeth kicked in tonight and we’re going to bounce back,” coach Rand Pecknold said after the Slovakia loss. “We’ll be really good (Thursday). It’s a lesson, a learning period and we’ll continue.”

Thursday doesn’t get any easier. Switzerland got off to a great start, winning their first two matches.

The Swiss defeated Finland in overtime and then beat Latvia in a shootout. With four points, they entered the Champions League tied for first in Group B with the Finns.

End of second half: USA 4, Switzerland 1

5:37 pm— The United States led by three points going into the final 20 minutes. The best time in this tournament is the USA, because they play like a game. They looked hard and kept the puck out of their zone. The Swiss will return to Biasca’s goal.

5:35 pm — WIN! The Swiss got on the board with 27.3 seconds left in the second when Attilio Biasca fired a shot right from the edge of the offensive zone that beat Augustine. A victory for the Swiss, and at the end of this season.

5:30 pm — WIN! Less than 90 seconds after the USA took a 3-0 lead, the USA had the advantage of pulling out of the foul zone, and Tyler Boucher put in a rebound in the area. Ryan Chesley made a good read as he shot the far post for the rebound and it was perfect, 4-0 USA with 1:58 left in the second.

5:27 pm — WIN! Snuggerud gets his second as the USA increases the PP again. Jackson Blake’s jam attempt was blocked by Begglieri, but he scooped it up, went around the net and found Snuggerud for a shot. Begglieri struck out on Blake’s first attempt and missed the base. 3-0 USA with over three minutes left in the second.

5:24 pm— Miles Muller gets the better of Savage on the ice and he goes for a cross check. There was no holding call on the play that pulled Savage down, but Muller’s push at the end was the name. USA 1 for 1 so far on PP.

5:21 pm— Augustine makes a big block on a 2 on 1. He stops the first shot, but the rebound goes right to Jabola in the slot. Augustine slipped and swallowed the second attempt. He hasn’t been very busy, especially in this second half, but he’s still sharp.

5:15 pm— He spends a lot of time in the Swiss border. I still want to see more pucks go to Begglieri, as the USA is up 14 at the half. You can tell a lot of American athletes are aiming to be first, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

5:10 p.m.— The puck is stopped by an early whistle, even if the puck is not covered. Tyler Boucher and Rodwin Dionicio were assessed minor penalties after coming on after the whistle and we went 4 to 4.

5:07 pm — WIN! A power play goal for the USA stretched it to two, as McGroarty dribbled between the legs and hit Cooley on the other side of the net. Both of them have been amazing this season, and Cooley is the first in the tournament. Both of America’s goals were direct results of clever passes.

5:05 pm — A move in Switzerland’s territory resulted in an American penalty when Jeremy Jabola was on the clock for two minutes. First PP for the USA.

5pm— The Americans beat Stramel to death. Two solid stops by Augustine on the PP.

4:58 pm— The second period is underway and Switzerland starts with a dominant play.

End of first period: USA 1, Switzerland 0

4:37 pm— The USA leads by a goal in the first place. It was a good time for the Americans and they were rewarded with a Snuggerud goal as they started to get more pucks on net. Charlie Stramel was called for a foul late in the period, so the Swiss started the second on the power play.

4:35 pm — WIN! The USA got on the board first with under two minutes left in the second. Cooley went behind the net, but Jimmy Snuggerud got behind him and beat Begglieri short. 1-0 USA.

4:34 pm— Bad moves by the Swiss allowed Red Savage to come down the left side to Begglieri, but the Swiss did a good job of keeping his corner. He doesn’t give much space for the American striker to shoot, and Beglieri saves the shoulder.

4:31 pm — One commonality between the way Latvia, Slovakia and Switzerland protect the US — they do not allow the Americans to use speed to kill them in transit. All three like to stay back and try to attack the neutral/middle zone of the defense. America’s threat to attack teams will be eliminated from the rush.

4:28 pm— A seam pass from the left to the right point gives Logan Cooley a great opportunity but Beglieri stabs him in the arm. Cooley was the leading American forward in the tournament, but the results didn’t show on the score sheet.

4:23 pm— The United States is doing the right thing to begin with – but taking shots on net. We have reached the halfway stage and Alessio Beglieri’s team is only three. Rutger McGroarty had a 2 on 1 chance to shoot, but elected to pass and go straight to the diving Swiss defender.

4:19 pm— One of the bright spots in the Slovakia game was the play of Gavin Brindley. He continued his strong play today, scoring two early points for the US

4:14 pm— Not much going for the Swiss on the PP, US kills the little Duke.
